Biography
Peter Webster is a professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the past president of the American Geophysical Union’s Atmospheric Sciences Section. His research concentrates on tropical oceanic and atmospheric dynamics, with emphasis on monsoons and predictability of tropical systems. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed literature, has received many national and international awards, and is a foremost authority on tropical dynamics. In collaboration with USAID, the World Bank, nongovernmental agencies, and national governments, he developed an operational flood-forecasting module for the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers, which has been transferred to the Bangladesh Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre. He recently developed an extended forecasting system, discussed in this book, for the entire Indus Delta.

    The underlying goal of this book is to facilitate and stimulate sharing of information on these phenomena and to provide an interdisciplinary framework for bringing about improved environmental conditions in Sindh. The book offers methods to identify environmental and climate change priority problems; analyzes interventions to address such problems; establishes a social learning mechanism to continuously improve Sindh’s responses and build resilience to climate variability and change; and provides opportunities for stakeholders to be involved in decisively tackling climate change and deteriorating environmental conditions.
