As a consequence, a growing number of EIAs include provisions on NTMs. However, little attention has been given in the literature to the effects of NTM liberalization in the context of EIAs. In this paper, we focus on provisions for technical regulations and analyze whether the North-South harmonization of technical barriers affects international trade. Using a gravity equation, it tests whether, as a result of the deep integration associated with standards provisions included in the EIA, the Southern partners' trade expands with the North, but at the expense of their trade with non-bloc Southern partners. Empirical results provide strong support for this conjecture. Moreover, harmonization on the basis of regional standards negatively impacts the exports of developing countries to the North.en-USCC BY 3.0 IGOAD VALOREMAGGREGATE TRADEAGRICULTURAL PRODUCTSAGRICULTURAL TRADEBARRIERS TO TRADEBILATERAL FLOWSBILATERAL IMPORTSBILATERAL TRADEBILATERAL TRADE FLOWSBLOC IMPORTSBLOC TARIFFSBORDER MEASURESCOMPETITIVE ADVANTAGECONFORMITY ASSESSMENT PROCEDURESCONVERGENCECOUNTRY FIXED EFFECTSCUSTOMSCUSTOMS ADMINISTRATIONCUSTOMS UNIONDEMAND ELASTICITIESDEVELOPED COUNTRIESDEVELOPING COUNTRIESDEVELOPING ECONOMIESDEVELOPING NATIONSDOLLAR VALUEDOMESTIC REGULATIONSDOMESTIC SALESDOMESTIC STANDARDSECONOMIC COOPERATIONECONOMIC INTEGRATIONECONOMIC POLICYELASTICITY OF DEMANDEUROPEAN UNIONEXPORT MARKETSEXPORT TAXEXPORT TAXESEXPORTERSEXPORTING COUNTRIESEXPORTING COUNTRYEXPORTSEXTERNAL TARIFFFREE TRADEFREE TRADE AGREEMENTFREE TRADE AGREEMENTSGLOBAL EFFICIENCYGLOBAL TRADEGLOBAL TRADINGGRAVITY EQUATIONGRAVITY FRAMEWORKGRAVITY MODELGRAVITY VARIABLESHARMONIZATIONIMPORT DEMANDIMPORTING COUNTRIESIMPORTING COUNTRYINCOMEINCOME COUNTRIESINDUSTRIAL COUNTRIESINEQUALITYINSURANCEINTEGRATION AGREEMENTSINTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTSINTERNATIONAL BANKINTERNATIONAL BUSINESSINTERNATIONAL ECONOMICSINTERNATIONAL STANDARDSINTERNATIONAL TRADEINTRA-REGIONAL TRADELEGAL TEXTLIBERALIZING TRADEMARKET REGULATIONSMARKET SIZEMARKET STRUCTUREMEMBER COUNTRIESMFN TARIFFSMULTILATERAL ARENAMULTILATERAL TRADEMULTILATERAL TRADE LIBERALIZATIONMUTUAL RECOGNITIONMUTUAL RECOGNITION AGREEMENTMUTUAL RECOGNITION AGREEMENTSMUTUAL RECOGNITION OF STANDARDSNATIONAL LEGISLATIONNON-MEMBER COUNTRIESNON-TARIFF MEASURESPATTERN OF TRADEPATTERNS OF TRADEPERFECT COMPETITIONPOLICY RESEARCHPREFERENTIAL TRADEPREFERENTIAL TRADE AGREEMENTSPRICE INDEXPRODUCT DIFFERENTIATIONPRODUCT STANDARDSPRODUCTION CHAINSPRODUCTION COSTSPROTECTIONISMPUBLIC PROCUREMENTRECOGNITION AGREEMENTSRECOGNITION OF CONFORMITY ASSESSMENTREGIONAL AGREEMENTSREGIONAL APPROACHESREGIONAL BASISREGIONAL HARMONIZATIONREGIONAL LIBERALIZATIONREGIONAL STANDARDSREGIONAL TRADEREGIONAL TRADE AGREEMENTSREGIONALISMREGULATORY COOPERATIONREGULATORY STANDARDSRULES OF ORIGINSAFETY STANDARDSSCALE ECONOMIESSINGLE MARKETSTANDARD ERRORSTAXTECHNICAL BARRIERSTECHNICAL REGULATIONTECHNICAL REGULATIONSTECHNICAL STANDARDSTERMS OF TRADETRADE AGREEMENTTRADE AGREEMENTSTRADE COSTSTRADE CREATIONTRADE DATATRADE DEFLECTIONTRADE DISTORTIONSTRADE DIVERSIONTRADE DIVERSION EFFECTTRADE EFFECTTRADE EFFECTSTRADE FLOWTRADE FLOWSTRADE FORUMTRADE IMPACTTRADE IN GOODSTRADE INTEGRATIONTRADE LIBERALIZATIONTRADE MODELSTRADE NEGOTIATIONSTRADE PATTERNSTRADE POLICYTRADE POLICY ANALYSISTRADE RELATIONSTRADE STRUCTURETRADE SYSTEMTRADING PARTNERSTRADING SYSTEMTRADING VOLUMESTRANSPARENCYTRANSPORT COSTSVALUE OF EXPORTSVOLUME OF TRADEWORLD ECONOMYWORLD TRADEWORLD TRADE ORGANIZATIONNorth-South Standards Harmonization and International TradeWorld Bank10.1596/1813-9450-6710
