The authors find an Average Treatment Effect on the order of 0.1 standard deviations (approximately 16 percent of the average score), using a control group of public school students. These effects are significantly larger for households at the bottom of the distribution, and smaller for those at the top. The authors posit that the better performance of the Fe y Alegría system stems from their labor contract flexibility and decentralized administrative structure.CC BY 3.0 IGOACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATIONAPTITUDEAUTONOMOUS SCHOOLSAVERAGE EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENTAVERAGE SCOREAVERAGE TREATMENT EFFECTBETTER TEACHERSCATHOLIC SCHOOLSCENTRAL CURRICULUMCLASSROOMCOLLEGE ENTRANCECOMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTCURRICULUMCURRICULUM DESIGNDECENTRALIZATIONDECENTRALIZATION OF EDUCATIONDECISION MAKINGDISADVANTAGED CHILDRENDISADVANTAGED GROUPSDISADVANTAGED STUDENTSDROPOUT RATESECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTECONOMIC GROWTHECONOMICS OF EDUCATIONEDUCATION CREDITEDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTEDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENTEDUCATIONAL OUTCOMESEDUCATIONAL REFORMSEDUCATIONAL SYSTEMSEMPLOYMENTENROLLMENTENTRANCE EXAMINATIONETHICSEVALUATION PAPERSEXAMSEXPENDITURESFUTURE RESEARCHGRADINGHIGH SCHOOLHIGH SCHOOL SENIORSHIGH SCHOOL STUDENTHIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSHUMAN CAPITALHUMAN DEVELOPMENTILLITERACYJOB TRAININGLABOR FORCELABOR UNIONSLEADERSHIPLEARNINGLITERACYLITERACY CAMPAIGNLITERACY RATELITERATURELOCAL SCHOOLSMATH SCORESNUMBER OF SCHOOLSPAPERSPARENT PARTICIPATIONPRIMARY SCHOOLPRIMARY SCHOOL PERFORMANCEPRIMARY SCHOOLSPRIVATE EDUCATIONPRIVATE SCHOOLPRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENTSPRIVATE SCHOOLINGPRIVATE SCHOOLSPUBLIC EDUCATIONPUBLIC SCHOOLPUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTSPUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEMPUBLIC SCHOOLINGPUBLIC SCHOOLSQUALITY EDUCATIONQUALITY OF EDUCATIONRADIOREASONINGRESEARCHERSRETURNS TO EDUCATIONSCHOOL ADMINISTRATIONSCHOOL ADMINISTRATORSSCHOOL BOARDSSCHOOL COMPLETIONSCHOOL CONSTRUCTIONSCHOOL CONTROLSCHOOL COUNCILSCHOOL DECISIONSCHOOL DISTRICTSSCHOOL FEESSCHOOL LEVELSCHOOL LEVELSSCHOOL OFFICIALSSCHOOL PERFORMANCESCHOOL PRINCIPALSSCHOOL QUALITYSCHOOL SYSTEMSCHOOL SYSTEMSSCHOOLINGSCHOOLING QUALITYSCHOOLSSECONDARY EDUCATIONSECONDARY SCHOOLSOCIAL MOBILITYSTANDARDIZED TESTSSTUDENT ACHIEVEMENTSTUDENT BODYSTUDENT PARTICIPATIONSTUDENT PERFORMANCETEACHERTEACHER ABSENTEEISMTEACHER BEHAVIORTEACHER INCENTIVESTEACHER QUALITYTEACHER STRIKESTEACHER TRAININGTEACHERSTEACHINGTEST SCORESTRAINING PROGRAMSTYPES OF STUDENTSVOUCHER SYSTEMVOUCHERSWORKERSYOUTHThe Performance of Decentralized School Systems : Evidence from Fe y Alegría in VenezuelaWorld Bank10.1596/1813-9450-4879
