Today, about 120 countries, more than half of them developing coun¬tries have a national target related to renewable energy. Moreover, 88 countries have introduced price- or quantity-based incentives for renewable energy. Just over half of those countries are developing. Doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix is one of the three complementary objectives of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative. Formally launched in the UN General Assembly in September 2012 and co-chaired by the president of the World Bank Group and the UN Secretary-General, SE4ALL calls on governments, businesses, and civil society to address urgent energy challenges, including increasing the use of renewable energy, by 2030.CC BY 3.0 IGOACCESS TO ELECTRICITYACCESS TO MODERN ENERGYBIOGASBIOMASSBOTTOM LINEBURNING COALCARBONCLIMATECLIMATE CHANGECOCO2COALCOMBUSTIONCONSUMPTION OF ENERGYCOOKINGDEFORESTATIONDISTRIBUTION OF ENERGYDOMESTIC ENERGYELECTRICITYELECTRICITY GENERATIONELECTRICITY PRODUCTIONELECTRICITY SUPPLYENERGY BALANCEENERGY CONSUMERSENERGY CONSUMPTIONENERGY EFFICIENCYENERGY EMISSIONSENERGY INDUSTRIESENERGY LOSSESENERGY MIXENERGY OUTPUTENERGY PRODUCTIONENERGY SECURITYENERGY SERVICESENERGY SOURCESENERGY USERSENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITSENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTSFORESTRYFOSSILFOSSIL FUELSFOSSIL-FUELFUELGENERATIONGLOBAL ELECTRICITY GENERATIONGLOBAL EMISSIONSGLOBAL ENERGY CONSUMPTIONGLOBAL ENERGY DEMANDGLOBAL ENERGY MIXGREENHOUSEGREENHOUSE GASGREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONSGREENHOUSE GAS INVENTORYGREENHOUSE GASESGRID ELECTRICITYHEATHEAT GENERATIONHEAT OUTPUTHEAT PUMPSHYDROPOWERINCOMEINTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCYNUCLEAR ENERGYOCEAN ENERGYOILPIPELINEPOWER GENERATIONPOWER GENERATION CAPACITYPRIMARY ENERGYPRODUCTION OF ENERGYRENEWABLE ENERGYRENEWABLE ENERGY NETWORKRENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCESRENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIESRENEWABLE ENERGY USERENEWABLE SOURCESRENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGYSOLAR ENERGYSOLAR IRRADIANCESOLAR WATER HEATERSSOLID BIOMASSSOURCE OF ENERGYSUSTAINABLE ENERGYTOTAL FINAL ENERGY CONSUMPTIONTRADITIONAL BIOMASSWASTEWINDWIND POWERWORLD CONSUMPTIONWORLD ENERGYDoubling the Share of Renewable Energy in the Global Energy MixBriefWorld Bank10.1596/20249
