Its objective is to pinpoint the areas to watch for in operations or policies that are decisive for results. By drawing the attention of development practitioners, policy makers, and evaluators to these seemingly obvious but often neglected areas, it aims to improve development effectiveness by better connecting interventions to desired results. The lessons follow a logical path from which results should be the focus of attention, to how those results are measured, to how to use evaluation for better results. The examples are mainly drawn from the work of the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) of the World Bank Group.CC BY 3.0 IGOACCESS TO INFORMATIONACCESSIBILITYACCOUNTABILITYADBADMINISTRATIVE COSTSAIRAIR QUALITYBENEFICIARIESBENEFIT ANALYSISBRIDGECAPACITY BUILDINGCARCARBONCASCHILD HEALTH SERVICESCLIMATE CHANGECOALCOMMUNITY DEVELOPMENTCONGESTIONCONSTRUCTION INDUSTRYCONTROL GROUPSCOST EFFECTIVENESSCOST-BENEFIT ANALYSESCOST-BENEFIT ANALYSISCOUNTERFACTUALCOUNTRY ASSISTANCE STRATEGIESDECISION MAKINGDEFORESTATIONDEMAND FOR TRANSPORTATIONDEVELOPMENT STRATEGIESDISASTER PREVENTIONDISASTERSDURABLE GOODSECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTECONOMIC GROWTHECONOMICSEMISSIONEMPLOYMENTENERGY EFFICIENCYENTREPRENEURSHIPENVIRONMENTALENVIRONMENTAL COSTSENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONENVIRONMENTSEVALUATION RESULTSFINANCIAL CRISESFINANCIAL RESOURCESFISHERIESFIXED CHARGEFIXED COSTSFORESTRYGRID CONNECTIONSHEALTH CAREHEALTH IMPROVEMENTSHEALTH INDICATORSHEALTH OUTCOMESHOSPITALSHOUSINGHYGIENEICRIMPACT EVALUATIONIMPACT OF INTERVENTIONSIMPLEMENTATION COMPLETION REPORTINCOMEINFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTSINLAND WATERWAYINLAND WATERWAYSINTERMEDIATE OUTCOMESINTERVENTIONJOURNEYJUVENILE DELINQUENCYLAND USELEARNINGLEGISLATIONLIFE EXPECTANCYLIVELIHOODSLIVING STANDARDSLOAD FACTORSMARKETINGMICROFINANCEMIGRATIONMORBIDITYMORTALITYMULTIMODAL TRANSPORTNONGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONSNUTRITIONNUTRITIONAL STATUSOILOPERATING COSTSPATIENTPEAK HOURSPOLICY CHANGESPOLICY DECISIONSPOLICY MAKERSPOLLUTIONPOLLUTION CONTROLPOLLUTION REDUCTIONPOPULATION DENSITYPOVERTY REDUCTIONPOVERTY REDUCTION PROGRAMSPREGNANT WOMENPRESENT VALUEPRISONSPRIVATE COSTSPRIVATE SCHOOLPRODUCERSPRODUCTIVITYPROGRAMSPROJECT OBJECTIVESQUALITY OF LIFEQUALITY STANDARDSRAILWAYRAILWAYSRATIONAL EXPECTATIONSRESOURCE USERISK MANAGEMENTRISK TAKINGROADROADSSAFETYSAFETY MEASURESSANITATIONSAVINGSSELECTION BIASSERVICE DELIVERYSOCIAL INCLUSIONSOCIAL INDICATORSSTREAMSSTRUCTURAL POLICIESSUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENTSUSTAINABLE USETARGETINGTAXATIONTAXISTECHNICAL ASSISTANCETECHNICAL QUALITYTRANSPARENCYTRANSPORTTRANSPORT INVESTMENTSTRANSPORT PROJECTSTRANSPORT SECTORTRANSPORTATIONTRANSPORTATION PROJECTSTRUEUNDERGROUNDURBAN TRANSPORTURBAN TRANSPORTATIONURBANIZATIONVEHICLEWASTEWATER POLLUTIONWATER SUPPLYWATER USEWEALTHWETLANDSWORKERSOverlooked Links in the Results ChainWorld Bank10.1596/978-1-60244-176-7
