World Bank2012-12-032012-12-032012-05https://hdl.handle.net/10986/11873This report provides a disaggregated profile of the world's small and large-scale fisheries and an estimate of its direct and indirect contributions to gross domestic product, food security, and rural livelihoods to uncover the hidden importance of the fisheries sector with a view to increasing its economic and environmental contributions in a sustainable manner. The study reveals serious information deficiencies that undermine decision makers' understanding of the importance of the fisheries sector. The study concludes that the contribution of the world's fisheries to national and global economies is greater than that generally recognized by decision makers and makes recommendations to reform, inform, and improve data collection regarding capture fisheries.en-USCC BY 3.0 IGOANOMALIESAQUACULTURE PRODUCTIONAQUATIC ANIMALSAQUATIC PLANTSARTISANAL FISHERIESARTISANAL FISHERYBASINBAYBEACHBRACKISH WATERCACAPTURE FISHERIESCAPTURE FISHERIES PRODUCTIONCAPTURE FISHERYCATCH INFORMATIONCATCH QUANTITIESCATCH VOLUMESCATCHESCLIMATE CHANGECLIMATIC CONDITIONSCOASTAL AREACOASTAL COMMUNITIESCOASTAL FISHERIESCOASTAL FISHINGCOASTAL REGIONSCOASTAL WATERSCOMMERCIAL FISHERIESCOMMERCIAL FISHERYCOMMERCIAL FISHINGCONSERVATION OF NATURECONTINENTCONTRIBUTION OF FISHERIESDEVELOPED COUNTRIESDEVELOPED COUNTRYDIETSEFFECTIVE FISHERIES MANAGEMENTENCROACHMENTENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATIONENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTSENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITYFISHFISH BIOMASSFISH CONSUMPTIONFISH OILFISH PROCESSINGFISH PRODUCTIONFISH RESOURCESFISH STOCKSFISHERFISHER CATCHFISHERIESFISHERIES ACTIVITIESFISHERIES AUTHORITIESFISHERIES CATCHESFISHERIES DATAFISHERIES DEVELOPMENTFISHERIES GOVERNANCEFISHERIES HARVESTFISHERIES MANAGEMENTFISHERIES POLICYFISHERIES PRODUCTIONFISHERIES RESOURCESFISHERIES SECTORFISHERIES SERVICEFISHERIES STATISTICSFISHERIES SUBSECTORFISHERSFISHERYFISHERY ACTIVITIESFISHERY PRODUCTIONFISHERY PRODUCTSFISHERY RESOURCESFISHERY STATISTICSFISHINGFISHING ACTIVITIESFISHING COMMUNITIESFISHING EQUIPMENTFISHING FLEETFISHING GEARFISHING GROUNDFISHING GROUNDSFISHING INDUSTRYFISHING LICENSEFISHING METHODSFISHING NETSFISHING OPERATIONSFISHING REELSFISHING RODSFISHING TACKLEFISHING TECHNIQUESFISHING VESSELFISHING VESSELSFISHMEALFLEET SEGMENTSFLEETSFLOOD CONTROLFOOD QUALITYFOOD SAFETYFOOD SAFETY REQUIREMENTSFOOD SECURITYFOOD SERVICEFOOD SUPPLIESFOOD SUPPLYFOREST RESOURCESFORESTSFROZEN FISHGEAR TYPEGLOBAL FISHERIESGLOBAL FISHERYHABITATHABITAT LOSSINDUSTRIAL FISHINGINLAND CAPTURE FISHERIESINLAND FISHERIESINLAND FISHINGINLAND WATERINLAND WATERSINTERNATIONAL FISHERIESINTERNATIONAL TRADELAKELAKESLANDINGLANDINGSLARGE-SCALE COMMERCIAL FISHERIESLARGER VESSELSLIVELIHOODSLIVING AQUATIC RESOURCESMANAGEMENT REGULATIONSMARINE AQUACULTUREMARINE AREASMARINE CATCHMARINE FISHERIESMARINE INSTITUTEMARINE MAMMALSMARINE WATERSMARSHESMINISTRY OF FISHERIESNATIONAL FISHERIESNATIONAL JURISDICTIONNATIONAL MARINE FISHERIESNATURAL DISASTERSNATURAL RESOURCENATURAL RESOURCE BASENATURAL VARIABILITYOCEANSOPEN OCEANSOVERCAPITALIZATIONOVERFISHINGPARTNERSHIPPEARLSPOLLUTIONRECREATIONAL FISHERIESRECREATIONAL FISHERSRECREATIONAL FISHINGREGIONAL FISHERIESRESERVOIRSRESPONSIBLE FISHERIESSALTINGSEASEAWEEDSHELLFISHSHORESHORELINESHRIMPSHRIMP TRAWLERSSMALL-SCALE FISHERIESSUBSISTENCE FISHINGSUPPLY OF FISHSUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURESUSTAINABLE FISHERIESSUSTAINABLE USETARGET SPECIESTOURISMTRADITIONAL FISHERYTRADITIONAL FISHINGTRAWLERSTROUTUNREPORTED FISHINGUNWANTED CATCHVALUATION METHODSVESSELWILDLIFEWOODLANDWORLD FISHERIESWORLD FISHING FLEETHidden Harvest : The Global Contribution of Capture FisheriesWorld Bank10.1596/11873
