dc.description.abstract	The Country Opinion Survey in Gambia assists the World Bank Group (WBG) in gaining a better understanding of how stakeholders in Gambia perceive the WBG. It provides the WBG with systematic feedback from national and local governments, multilateral/bilateral agencies, media, academia, the private sector, and civil society in Gambia on 1) their views regarding the general environment in Gambia; 2) their overall attitudes toward the WBG in Gambia; 3) overall impressions of the WBG’s effectiveness and results, knowledge work and activities, and communication and information sharing in Gambia; and 4) their perceptions of the WBG’s future role in Gambia.	en

National Socioeconomic Surveys in Forestry : Guidance and Survey Models for Measuring the Multiple Roles of Forests in Household Welfare and Livelihoods

FAO along with CIFOR, IFRI (International Forestry Resources and Institutions), and the World Bank LSMS (Living Standards Measurement Study) and PROFOR programs came together with the objective of developing specialized modules on forest and wild products (herein referred to as forestry modules) to fill current information gaps concerning the relationship of forest and wild products to household well-being. This sourcebook builds on the results from field tests to present a set of survey modules on forest and wild products that can be used to provide information on the socioeconomic contributions of forests and non-forest environments to household welfare and livelihoods.

Trust, Voice, and Incentives : Learning from Local Success Stories in Service Delivery in the Middle East and North Africa

This report examines the role of incentives, trust, and engagement as critical determinants of service delivery performance in MENA countries. Focusing on education and health, the report illustrates how the weak external and internal accountability undermines policy implementation and service delivery performance and how such a cycle of poor performance can be counteracted. Case studies of local success reveal the importance of both formal and informal accountability relationships and the role of local leadership in inspiring and institutionalizing incentives toward better service delivery performance. Enhancing services for MENA citizens requires forging a stronger social contract among public servants, citizens, and service providers while empowering communities and local leaders to find 'best fit' solutions. Learning from the variations within countries, especially the outstanding local successes, can serve as a solid basis for new ideas and inspiration for improving service delivery. Microfinance and Economic Development

Microfinance is generally seen as a way to fix credit markets and unleash the productive capacities of poor people who are dependent on self-employment. The microfinance sector has grown quickly since the 1990s, paving the way for other forms of social enterprise and social investment. But recent evidence shows only modest average impacts on customers, generating a backlash against microfinance. This paper reconsiders the claims about microfinance, highlighting the diversity in evidence on impacts and the important (but limited) role of subsidies. The paper concludes by describing an evolution of thinking: from microfinance as narrowly construed entrepreneurial finance toward microfinance as broadly construed household finance. In this vision, microfinance yields benefits by providing liquidity for a wide range of needs rather than solely by boosting business income.
