dc.description.abstract	This brief has provided a basic profile of child marriage in Burkina Faso. Measures of child marriage are high. The share of women ages 18-22 who married as children is 49.8 percent and it has not declined substantially over time. The share of girls marrying very early, before the age of 15, has also not changed much (it has increased slightly versus 25 years ago). Child marriage is associated with lower wealth, lower education levels, and higher labor force participation. These are however only correlations, not necessarily causal effects. Other briefs in this series look at potential causal effects.	en

Big Numbers about Small Children : Estimating the Economic Benefits of Addressing Undernutrition

Different approaches have been used to estimate the economic benefits of reducing undernutrition and to estimate the costs of investing in such programs on a global scale. While many of these studies are ultimately based on evidence from well-designed efficacy trials, all require a number of assumptions to project the impact of such trials to larger populations and to translate the value of the expected improvement in nutritional status into economic terms. This paper provides a short critique of some approaches to estimating the benefits of investments in child nutrition and then presents an alternative set of estimates based on different core data. These new estimates reinforce the basic conclusions of the existing literature: the economic value of reducing undernutrition in undernourished populations is likely to be substantial.

Mobilizing a Global Response to Hepatitis : Lessons Learned from the HIV Movement

Hepatitis caused by hepatitis B and C virus is increasingly becoming a significant global health threat, with widespread prevalence that may have severe disease and economic impacts in the future. Yet, preventative measures are not implemented universally and high costs of medicines limits treatment efforts. The global response to HIV/AIDS faced similar issues, but overcame them through a global movement that brought attention to the crisis and ultimately resulted in the creation and implementation of and access to better tools for HIV prevention and treatment. This also included effective policies and programs behind and supporting the movement. Such could be done for hepatitis, specifically using lessons from the HIV response. Here, we will discuss the current and potentially severe future burden of hepatitis globally, the challenges in addressing this epidemic, and how principles applied from the global HIV response can facilitate a successful and similar hepatitis movement.

Women-Owned Enterprises in Vietnam : Perceptions and Potential

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to Vietnam’s economic growth, accounting for more than 98 percent of all business, 40 percent of Gross domestic product (GDP), and 50 percent of total employment. The number of SMEs grew by around 100,000 in 2016, encouraged in part by increased government efforts to facilitate new business. Vietnam’s women own 95,906 or about 21 percent of formal enterprises. Vietnam has fewer differences between the legal statuses of men and women. However, most banks have yet to consider adopting strategies that cater to women-owned SMEs. Even when women entrepreneurs do qualify for a bank loan, they tend to receive less than what they asked for, and lower amounts than men.
