Abstract

What is the share of students attending faith-inspired schools (FISs) in Africa? Do FISs reach the poor in priority? How much do they cost for households? And how do FISs compare with public schools and private secular schools in these areas? This article provides tentative answers to these questions using evidence from multi-purpose household surveys.

A Welfarist Theory Unifying Monetary and Non-Monetary Poverty Measurement

Multidimensional poverty measures are increasingly used in practice even though they face strong criticism and generate longlasting debates. These contentions primarily find their origin in the divergence between standard poverty identification practices and a welfarist definition of the poor. This paper fills this gap by constructing a poverty measurement theory that (i) adopts a welfarist definition of the poor, (ii) acknowledges that the relevant welfare function is only partially known and (iii) encompasses both market and non-market dimensions of well-being. The theory shows that standard identification practices are not flexible enough in order to properly account for the multidimensional nature of well-being. The Returns to Innovation in East Asia : The Role of the Business Environment and Firms' Characteristics

The paper studies the relationship between innovation efforts, innovation outputs, and productivity, using firm-level data from six East Asian countries. Firms are more likely to invest in innovation when they use technology licensed by a foreign company, are part of a large group, and have a more educated workforce. Investment in research and development can significantly boost both product and process innovation. Product innovation yields significant productivity gains. However, productivity gains from process innovation are not detectable in the sample.

With the advent of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Brazil has come out with one of the fastest and most generous social protection responses globally. Auxilio Emergencial (AE’s) operation is in contrast to that of regular social protection programs due to its highly centralized setup with limited formal involvement of subnational governments. Therefore, this analysis aims at understanding some core reasons why this happened and what were the main implications of this centralized operation to the program.
