Yemen - Sector Wide Approach in the Water Sector : Assessment of Readiness and Opportunities

This report reviews the economically vital and under-funded water sector in Yemen in alignment with the national water strategy and in harmonization with Yemen's development partners to provide support to water strategy implementation. The results indicate that at the level of the water sector, there is willingness and desire to move to a sector wide approach. Yemen National Water Sector Strategy and Investment Program was an integrated and shared strategy and could serve as a platform for common and integrated approaches to sector investment. Therefore, the Government of Yemen and donors agreed to explore the possibilitiessector wide approach investment strategy and the Bank was asked to help assess the potential relevance and scope. Yemen : Towards Deeper Trade Integration

This note sketches a possible strategy for Yemen to deepen integration with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It advocates that Yemen put priority on such integration as a complement to its ongoing effort to accede to the WTO, and pause temporarily the implementation of the free trade agreement with Arab League signatories of the Greater Arab free Trade Agreement. As there is no standard set of GCC accession requirements, closer integration with the GCC will require development of specific action plans for the various policy areas covered by the GCC that identify specific measures to be undertaken by Yemen and GCC partners to realize the potential benefits of cooperation.

Youth are an asset that if properly nurtured can stimulate the economic and social development of the region. Zimbabwe : Spatial Integration in Zimbabwean Product Markets

The purpose of this policy note is to provide evidence on the level of integration between Zimbabwe’s domestic markets for grain and staple foods. Efficient and integrated agricultural markets are an important vehicle for growth and poverty reduction. The note determines whether Zimbabwe’s provincial markets are integrated and explores the determinants of market integration. It provides estimates of the speed of adjustment between markets pairs. The analysis investigates the extent to which distances and demand for the products determine market integration. The paper concludes with a discussion of other structural or policy related factors that affect integration and efficiency of domestic markets.

The Government understands the need to watch the escalating wage bill carefully and put in place a strategy to steer it to a sustainable level as early as possible. Historical and international comparisons suggest that an overall wage bill of around 10 percent of GDP should be the medium-term target. This note illustrates that Zimbabwe could take immediate steps in 2010 and 2011 that will put it on the path of a sustainable level of wage bill in the medium-term.
