Central Bank Digital Currencies for Cross-border Payments : A Review of Current Experiments and Ideas

Over the years, the demand for seamless and inexpensive cross-border payments has grown in parallel with growth in international e-commerce, remittances and tourism. Yet, cross-border payments have not kept pace with the intensive modernization that has characterized domestic payment services worldwide. An alternative avenue to modernize delivery of cross-border payment services is being increasingly explored in the context of central banks issuing their own digital currency. A central bank digital currency (CBDC) could well incorporate options and features specifically designed to execute cross-border payments, with a view to reducing the inefficiencies and rents discussed above by shortening the payments value chain. Stationary Energy Storage to Transform Power Systems in Developing Countries

Versatility, ease of deployment, modular design, and falling costs make stationary energy storage systems appealing for integrating renewable electricity into grids. Their most common uses are in hybrid power plants at utility scale; as a replacement for diesel-fueled backup generators; as a source of ancillary services for main grids; and as a component in mini- and off-grid systems deployed to expand access to electricity. But challenges remain to scale up energy storage sustainably in developing countries. The World Bank's new Energy Storage Partnership is addressing those challenges.

South Asia Economic Focus, Spring 2021 : South Asia Vaccinates

South Asia region’s economies are beginning to recover, though unevenly: economic activity in industry and export sectors have recovered to pre-COVID levels but some labor-intensive services sectors and tourism have not. Inequality has worsened on many dimensions. The process of vaccinating South Asia’s population is underway, with India taking a leading role in production. The socioeconomic benefits of vaccinating most South Asians as soon as possible outweighs the cost by multiple times, and thus justifies having public sector financing. Cracks in the primary health care system became evident since the pandemic began, and the vaccine rollout is likely to have other additional challenges such as delays in production, bottlenecks in supply chain logistics and vaccine hesitancy from some groups (which could delay the process of herd immunity). There are also tradeoffs in the priorities that should be established in deciding who gets the vaccine first.
