dc.description.abstract	In Africa. many now seem to agree that developing infrastructure is critical for reducing poverty and promoting sustained economic growth, that the private sector has an essential contribution to make in this effort, and that while expanding the private sector's participation in infrastructure is challenging under any circumstances, it is more difficult in Africa than anywhere else. This new view has led to a surge in demand for assistance from the Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility (PPIAF), and PPIAF is responding through a strategy combining its traditional upstream work with a greater focus on innovative new approaches to private participation in infrastructure.	en

By the end of 2013, 144 countries both developed and developing had established plans for the expansion of power generation from renewable energy (REN 21). In setting these goals, countries are driven by a number of strategic considerations, including energy security, reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, the need to expand and improve energy services for growing populations, and industrialization and job creation. Among renewable energy sources, solar and wind resources stand out as having high inherent resource variability and limited predictability. To achieve a reliable, stable power supply, power system operators must continuously balance supply and demand. Integrating climate and development is a pillar of the World Bank Group’s Climate Change Action Plan 2021-25. To advance its implementation, the Bank Group has launched a new, core diagnostic tool: the Country Climate and Development Report, a new, core diagnostic tool that analyzes how a country’s development goals can be achieved in the context of adapting to and mitigating against climate change. Rohingya Refugee Camps and Forest Loss in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh : An Inquiry Using Remote Sensing and Econometric Approaches

How do refugee camps impact the natural environment This paper examines the case study of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, a district that hosts nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees in refugee camps. Using spatially explicit data on land-use / land cover and proximity to a camp boundary, the paper quantifies land-use changes across the district over time. To evaluate the extent to which the camps triggered additional forest loss, the analysis calculates total forest loss in the district and uses a difference-in-difference model that compares areas 0–5 kilometers from a camp boundary (treatment) to areas 10–15 kilometers away (control). The findings show that the rate of forest loss intensified near camps relative to the control area. The analysis reveals that areas experiencing camp-stimulated reductions in forest cover are also experiencing faster settlement expansion relative to the control ...
