dc.description.abstract	Planning for hydropower development needs to evolve from a project-based engineering approach to a more holistic one - an approach incorporating river basin planning and integrating potential social and environmental issues across multiple projects and the entire river basin. Such a framework would help to optimize the benefits and minimize the costs. It would also bring stakeholders together to weigh opportunities and risks and form a consensus for sustainable and equitable development. A Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility (PPIAF)-funded study on two river basins in India's Himalayan region outlines steps for moving toward such a holistic framework.	en

El Grupo Banco Mundial ha establecido dos objetivos primordiales: poner fin a la pobreza extrema para el año 2030 y promover la prosperidad compartida aumentando los ingresos del 40 % más pobre de la población en cada país. The 21st century will witness the collision of two powerful forces – burgeoning population growth, together with a changing climate. With population growth, water scarcity will proliferate to new areas across the globe. And with climate change, rainfall will become more fickle, with longer and deeper periods of droughts and deluges. This report presents new evidence to advance understanding on how rainfall shocks coupled with water scarcity, impacts farms, firms, and families. On farms, the largest consumers of water in the world, impacts are channeled from declining yields to changing landscapes. In cities, water extremes especially when combined with unreliable infrastructure can stall firm production, sales, and revenue. At the center of this are families, who feel the impacts of this uncertainty on their incomes, jobs, and long-term health and welfare. Although a rainfall shock may be fleeting, its consequences can become permanent and shape the destiny of those who experience it. Shared Prosperity and Poverty Eradication in Latin America and the Caribbean

Over the last decade Latin America and the Caribbean region has achieved important progress towards the World Bank Group's goals of eradicating extreme poverty and boosting income growth of the bottom 40 percent, propelled by remarkable economic growth and falling income inequality. Despite this impressive performance, social progress has not been uniform over this period, and certain countries, subregions and even socioeconomic groups participated less in the growth process. As of today, more than 75 million people still live in extreme poverty in the region (using $2.50/day/capita), half of them in Brazil and Mexico, and extreme poverty rates top 40 percent in Guatemala and reach nearly 60 percent in Haiti. This means that extreme poverty is still an important issue in both low- and middle-income countries in the region. As growth wanes and progress in reducing the still high levels of inequality in the region slows, it will be more important than ever for governments to focus policies on inclusive growth.
