dc.description.abstract	Independent Evaluation Group's (IEG's) country impact review (the report) examines if, from July 1998 through December 2007, International Finance Corporation (IFC): (i) successfully defined a relevant and appropriate strategy for helping Nigeria tackle its most pressing needs; (ii) provided investment and advisory services that were reflective of IFC's strategy; and (iii) achieved positive development results. IFC's strategies in Nigeria reflected the characteristics of IFC's process for development of country strategies jointly with the World Bank. These characteristics include: (i) poor integration with IFC's main strategy and budget process; (ii) loosely formulated country objectives and priorities in terms of sectors and products; and (iii) little or no resource allocation. As a result, IFC's strategies for Nigeria have not fulfilled their purpose of setting priorities, defining targets, and securing the human, organizational, and other resources required.	en

This report, which focuses on three regions—Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America that together represent 55 percent of the developing world’s population—finds that climate change will push tens of millions of people to migrate within their countries by 2050. It projects that without concrete climate and development action, just over 143 million people—or around 2.8 percent of the population of these three regions—could be forced to move within their own countries to escape the slow-onset impacts of climate change. They will migrate from less viable areas with lower water availability and crop productivity and from areas affected by rising sea level and storm surges. The poorest and most climate vulnerable areas will be hardest hit. These trends, alongside the emergence of “hotspots” of climate in- and out-migration, will have major implications for climate-sensitive sectors and for the adequacy of infrastructure and social support systems. Easing the Transition to Commercial Finance for Sustainable Water and Sanitation

Providing sustainable water supply and sanitation (WSS) services in developing countries remains an immense, and increasingly urgent, challenge. Chapter two sets out how the sector is currently funded and why business as usual is insufficient for meeting WSS-related goals, covering the size of the investment gap, and the challenges presented by the status quo. Chapter three proposes a financing framework toward more effective use of existing funds to enable the mobilization of new sources of finance, and explains the benefits and costs of commercial finance. Chapters four to six detail the three components of the financing framework, providing practical advice and global experiences that demonstrate how countries can begin to make progress. Poverty Alleviation and Interhousehold Transfers : Evidence from BRAC's Graduation Program in Bangladesh

Poor households often rely on transfers from their social networks for consumption smoothing, yet there is limited evidence on how antipoverty programs affect informal transfers. This paper exploits the randomized roll-out of BRAC's ultra-poor graduation program in Bangladesh and panel data covering over 21,000 households over seven years to study the program's effects on interhousehold transfers. The program crowds out informal transfers received by the program's beneficiaries, but this is driven mainly by outside-village transfers. Treated ultra-poor households become more likely to both give and receive transfers to/from wealthier households within their communities; and less likely to receive transfers from their employers.
