dc.description.abstract	The main goal of International Finance Corporation's (IFC's) Corporate Governance Project in Pakistan is to establish sustainable capacity in the country so that, once the project is over, institutions will be able to improve their corporate governance practices to international standards using locally available resources. The project aims to achieve this goal by helping set up a stable and robust regulatory framework, establishing sustainable institutions to train directors and improve board performance, training the media in selecting and reporting issues that communicate the local relevance of corporate governance, and encouraging business schools to incorporate corporate governance as a core subject in the MBA curriculum.	en

Trust, Voice, and Incentives : Learning from Local Success Stories in Service Delivery in the Middle East and North Africa

This report examines the role of incentives, trust, and engagement as critical determinants of service delivery performance in MENA countries. Focusing on education and health, the report illustrates how the weak external and internal accountability undermines policy implementation and service delivery performance and how such a cycle of poor performance can be counteracted. Case studies of local success reveal the importance of both formal and informal accountability relationships and the role of local leadership in inspiring and institutionalizing incentives toward better service delivery performance. Enhancing services for MENA citizens requires forging a stronger social contract among public servants, citizens, and service providers while empowering communities and local leaders to find 'best fit' solutions. Learning from the variations within countries, especially the outstanding local successes, can serve as a solid basis for new ideas and inspiration for improving service delivery. Bangladesh : Can Conditional Cash Transfers Improve Nutrition?

Policymakers and development groups are interested in innovative ways to deliver cash transfer programs and make an impact where it s needed most. In Bangladesh, World Bank researchers worked with the government to evaluate a pilot social protection program that conditioned transfers on primary school attendance, monthly growth monitoring for young children and monthly nutrition sessions for mothers. Payments were made to mothers via electronic cash cards. While the program had no effect on school attendance, it significantly boosted consumption of protein and other nutrition- rich foods, and reduced wasting. Based on the results, the nutrition-related part of the program is being scaled up with World Bank assistance to reach 600,000 of the poorest households across Bangladesh, potentially benefitting 2.7 million people.
