20 Years of HIV in Bangladesh : Experiences and Way Forward

This report synthesizes data from surveillance, behavioral surveys and published and unpublished research to better understand emerging patterns and trends in the HIV epidemic in Bangladesh. Taking stock of 20 years of experience with HIV in Bangladesh, this report summarizes what is known about the coverage and impact of HIV prevention services, including knowledge on risk and protective behaviors. The report is divided into nine chapters. Chapter one provides a brief introduction and an overview of the methodology used for this exercise. Chapter two discusses the risks and vulnerabilities of the high risk groups including female sex workers, injecting drug users, male who have sex with male, hijra and overlapping populations, while chapter three discusses the trend of the infection amongst partners of high risk groups. Accelerating the Education Sector Response to HIV : Five Years of Experience from Sub-Saharan Africa

The work described in this review shows the commitment of education teams throughout Africa to contribute to the multisectoral response to HIV/AIDS. It is also a testament to the leadership shown by ministries of education, in helping the new generation of children and youth grow up better able to challenge HIV, and in providing care and support for the educators who often represent more than half the public sector workforce. The work described in this review does not suggest any single solution. Instead, the approach is based on the recognition that Africa is a diverse continent, and countries need to find their own local approaches to the epidemic. The Regional Economic Communities (RECs) of the African Union have been instrumental in encouraging locally specific responses, and recognizing that HIV knows no frontiers, in coordinating responses among neighbors. Action through Partnerships : The Pan-Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP)

The Pan-Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) was designated an 'international best practice' by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). A case study on the Pan-Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) in December, 2004. The Caribbean region is second only to Sub-Saharan Africa in HIV prevalence with an estimated adult HIV prevalence rate of 2.3 percent in 2003. Approximately 430,000 adults and 23,000 children are living with HIV in the region. HIV/ AIDS are the leading cause of death among adults in the age group 15-44 years. The epidemic is not just a health problem, but a developmental and economic problem as it affects the most productive human resources and redirects efforts from productive activities to HIV/AIDS treatment and care. The Africa Multi-Country AIDS Program 2000-2006 : Results of the World Bank's Response to a Development Crisis

It also proposes a new Results Scorecard and Generic Results Framework to better measure and report future results of HIV/AIDS programs in Africa that the World Bank helps to support.

AIDS at 35 : A Midlife Crisis

This year marks the 35th since AIDS was first identified and the epidemic faces a ‘mid-life’ crisis. It seems to us it is time to take stock of both the successes we have meet and the challenges we face. In this editorial for the final issue of AJAR in 2016 we do this. We warned of the potential devastation AIDS would wreak across Africa, but this went unheard. We watched with dismay as colleagues and friends sickened and died, and the political leaders initially ignored what was to come. In this editorial we look at the best of times – where things went well; and the worst of times – where the challenges lie.

AIDS in South Asia : Understanding and Responding to a Heterogeneous Epidemic

South Asia's HIV epidemic is highly heterogeneous. As a result, informed, prioritized, and effective responses necessitate an understanding of the epidemic diversity between and within countries. Further spread of HIV in South Asia is preventable. The future size of South Asia's epidemic will depend on an effective two-pronged approach: firstly, on the scope and effectiveness of HIV prevention programs for sex workers and their clients, injecting drug users and their sexual partners, and men having sex with men and their other sexual partners; and secondly, on the effectiveness of efforts to address the underlying socio-economic determinants of the epidemic, and to reduce stigma and discrimination towards people engaging in high risk behaviors, often marginalized in society, as well as people living with HIV and AIDS.
